Referrals to Definitive Care Performance Improvement Initiative
Regional Data
Each month, our two Level II Trauma Centers submit Emergency Department Length of Stay data to the Coordinator for compilation into a regional percentage. The data reflects the percentage of major trauma patients (ISS>15) that are referred to the Level IIs and spent less than 3 hours at the referring Level III or IV Trauma Center.

Barrier Identification
At several 2006 NCRTAC definitive care subcommittee breakout sessions, we have worked on identifying barriers to timely referrals to definitive care for major trauma patients. At the May 2006 meeting, a letter was drafted that summarizes four of the biggest opportunities for improvement. The hospital break out group that drafted the letter agreed that these opportunities for improvement are best addressed at the local level through hospital contacts with local stakeholders. The letter and documents from this process are listed below for use in local PI efforts.
